Wallenius Wilhelmsen has signed a two-year fuel supply agreement with Equinor for mass-balanced bio-methanol to support the decarbonisation of its ocean operations.
The fuel will be produced in Norway and delivered to Wallenius Wilhelmsen vessels in Antwerp and Zeebrugge. According to the company, the ISCC EU-certified bio-methanol is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by 95%.
Supporting Lower-Emission Shipping
The agreement forms part of Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s plan to deliver a net-zero end-to-end pilot service for selected customers from 2027.
Xavier Leroi, Chief Operating Officer Shipping Services at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said the agreement supports the company’s efforts to decarbonise ocean operations and develop lower-emission logistics services for customers.
Scaling Alternative Fuel Supply
Equinor said demand for bio-methanol is increasing as shipping companies seek practical fuel options to reduce emissions. The company has also signed bio-methanol supply agreements with other operators, including Maersk and NCL.
Christos Chryssakis, Vice President Energy and Regulations at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, said long-term agreements are important in creating demand signals for fuel producers and supporting wider commercial deployment of alternative fuels across the shipping industry.
