Wallenius Wilhelmsen has successfully conducted its first biofuel bunkering trial in Japan, further demonstrating the company’s commitment to decarbonizing its operations and promoting sustainable shipping practices.
The M/V Tamesis was bunkered with 400 metric tons of Bio Bunker B24 (VLSFO Blended) at the Port of Yokohama. The biofuel was supplied by Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd. This milestone follows successful biofuel bunkering trials in Belgium, Korea, and Singapore, expanding Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s network of biofuel supply locations.
“Achieving these targets requires a major shift in energy sources from conventional fuels to low and zero-carbon alternatives,” said Yasuyuki Sakurai, Senior Manager of the Orcelle Accelerator taskforce at Wallenius Wilhelmsen. “Expanding supply locations and securing sufficient biofuels remain a priority, and we are pleased to have conducted our first B24 VLSFO blended biofuel bunkering trial in Yokohama.”
Collaboration for a Sustainable Future
This achievement was made possible through close collaboration between Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd.
“In anticipation of growing demand for biofuel in the marine sector, we have begun storing biofuel at our oil terminal in Onahama (Fukushima Prefecture) and supplying B24 in Tokyo Bay using our barges,” said Mitsuo Ueda, General Manager of Mitsubishi Corporation Energy Co., Ltd. “We deeply admire Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s leadership in the decarbonization of the shipping industry and remain committed to playing our part in creating a more sustainable future.”
Wallenius Wilhelmsen aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040 and has set a target of a 40% absolute reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, compared to its 2022 baseline. The company is actively pursuing the use of biofuels and other alternative fuels to reduce its environmental impact and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable shipping industry.
