Hapag-Lloyd has secured green financing for its 24 new large container ships ordered in October 2024. The new vessels, with a combined capacity of 312,000 TEUs, represent an investment of approximately USD 4 billion. The financing covers around 80% of the investment volume, with maturities ranging between 10 and 18 years.
The financing comprises four components:
- Equity: Approximately USD 900 million from Hapag-Lloyd’s own funds.
- Mortgage Loans: USD 500 million from two banks.
- Leasing Structures: USD 1.8 billion from three leasing arrangements.
- Syndicated Credit Facility: USD 1.1 billion backed by the China Export & Credit Insurance Corporation (Sinosure).
This financing aligns with Hapag-Lloyd’s Green Financing Framework, which complies with the Green Loan Principles of the Loan Market Association (LMA). The framework and the vessels’ efficiency have been verified by DNV, an international classification society.
“We are continuously modernizing our fleet to deliver high-quality service and achieve our ambitious decarbonization goals,” said Mark Frese, CFO/CPO of Hapag-Lloyd AG. “The successful conclusion of several attractive financial transactions confirms that green financing components are becoming increasingly important.”
Commitment to Sustainability
Hapag-Lloyd is committed to the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement. The company aims to reduce its fleet’s absolute greenhouse gas emissions by around a third by 2030, compared to 2022 levels, as part of its goal to achieve net-zero fleet operation by 2045.
The 24 new vessels will be built in China and equipped with state-of-the-art, low-emission, and fuel-efficient high-pressure liquefied gas dual-fuel engines. They can also be operated using biomethane, which can reduce CO2e emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional propulsion systems. The ships will be ammonia-ready and are scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2029.
This investment in a modern and environmentally friendly fleet demonstrates Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to sustainable shipping and its dedication to reducing its environmental impact.
