The Port of Savannah welcomed the OOCL Iris on February 25th, marking the arrival of the largest capacity vessel to ever call the port. With a maximum capacity of 16,828 TEUs, the OOCL Iris surpasses the previous record holder, the CMA CGM Marco Polo, which had a capacity of 16,022 TEUs.

The OOCL Iris is 1,204 feet long and 167 feet wide. During its time in Savannah, the port handled over 2,800 container moves on and off the vessel, equivalent to just over 5,000 TEUs.

This record-breaking call highlights the Port of Savannah’s growing capacity and its ability to accommodate increasingly larger vessels. To further enhance its capabilities, the Georgia Department of Transportation will begin construction in 2026 to raise the height of the Talmadge Bridge. This project will allow even larger vessels to access the port in the future.

“The arrival of the OOCL Iris is a testament to the Port of Savannah’s continued growth and its importance as a gateway for global trade,” said a spokesperson for the Georgia Ports Authority. “We are committed to investing in our infrastructure to ensure that we can continue to serve the needs of our customers and accommodate the largest vessels in the world.”
