On May 27th, Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the leading port operator in Thailand, continues to tackle climate change with the Faculty of International Maritime Studies, Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus (IMS, KU) for the 3rd Year of Go Green Project. Both parties held a press conference at the Faculty of International Maritime Studies to officially announce their Go Green activities for 2024.
Taking concrete action is imperative to create impactful change and combat the issue. This year, HPT and IMS, KU enhanced environmental Partnerships by expanding a wider range of collaboration with communities and new generations. The Go Green Project is part of the extended Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between HPT and IMS, KU to continue promoting sustainability in the sea freight industry by cooperating with academia and initiating CSR activities.
During the event, Asst. Prof. Seri Koonjaenak, DVM, PhD, Vice President of Kasetsart University Sriracha Campus, delivered a welcome speech and a thank you speech from Asst. Prof. Dr Sarinya Sanitwong Na Ayutthaya, Dean for Faculty of the Faculty of International Maritime Studies, to all attendees. Mr Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Thailand & South East Asia, Hutchison Ports, was honoured to give a speech unveiling the Go Green 2024 initiatives and its objectives.
“Sustainability is a core principle at HPT. We are committed to working collaboratively with our colleagues, customers, suppliers, and the community to minimise our environmental impact. This includes a strong focus on greenhouse gas reduction and waste minimisation. We are excited about our partnership with the Faculty of International Maritime Studies at Kasetsart University for the Go Green project. This collaboration allows us to impact a greener future greatly.” – said Mr Ashworth.
“At IMS, we understand the importance of sustainability in the maritime industry. Climate change poses a significant threat to our oceans and coastal communities. We are proud to partner with Hutchison Ports Thailand for the Go Green project for the third consecutive year. Through this collaboration, we aim to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices within the maritime sector.” – said Asst. Prof. Dr. Sarinya.
The Go Green project encompasses a variety of exciting initiatives planned for 2024, including delivery of guest lectures by experts from Hutchison Ports Thailand on Port Efficiency Management and Port Sustainability Management, internship opportunities for our students at Hutchison Ports Thailand, providing valuable real-world experience, tree planting activities, both on campus and throughout the local community, a student painting contest with the theme ‘Green Port Saves the Ocean’, encouraging creative expression on environmental issues, a waste management workshop under the topic ‘Waste2Worth’ for the local community.
As a leading port operator in Thailand, HPT takes environmental responsibility seriously. Just last year, HPT achieved significant progress in reducing its environmental footprint. We lowered our CO2 intensity (kg CO2e/TEU) by 1% on a year-over-year basis, and we exceeded our target set for the 3-year diesel reduction programme, achieving a total of 8.27% reduction in diesel consumption per TEU. These achievements demonstrate Hutchison Ports Thailand’s commitment to a greener future.
