Hutchison Ports Thailand World Maritime Day

Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the leading port operator in Thailand, celebrated World Maritime Day 2022 by encouraging students at the Faculty of International Maritime Studies, Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, to focus on the green transition of the maritime sector to create a sustainable future. Attending the annual uniform ceremony at Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, Chonburi province Hutchison Ports Managing Director of Thailand and Southeast Asia Stephen Ashworth spoke to students about “New Technologies for Greener Shipping”, showcasing maritime innovation, research and development, and the deployment of new technologies and stressing the importance of the port business in the supply chain system. During his talk, he spoke about the importance of investing in the research and development of new technologies for safe sea transportation and how this investment can support the environmentally friendly transformation of the maritime sector for a sustainable future.

Stephen Ashworth, Managing Director of Thailand and South East Asia, Hutchison Ports, said, “We are honoured to be invited by the university to join this year’s uniform ceremony, which also coincides with World Maritime Day. Kasetsart University, Sriracha Campus, is close to Laem Chabang Port, and the Faculty of International Maritime Studies has an excellent reputation for promoting marine studies. The faculty continues to be a source of motivated and results-driven graduates who wish to pursue a career in the ports, shipping & logistics sector. Our collaboration is an excellent example of how we can support the local community, a key aspect of our sustainable development.”

In August 2020, Hutchison Ports Thailand’s association with Kasetsart University strengthened after signing a Memorandum of Agreement. It extended their cooperation to provide more structured research, teaching, internship and career support for students.

This year, “New Technologies for Greener Shipping” is the key priority for Hutchison Ports, reflecting the need to support the transformation of the maritime sector towards a sustainable future – showcasing marine innovation, research and development and the deployment of new technologies.

“As a global port operator, we have been running sustainability initiatives for many years. Our group is committed to a sustainable future, and our various programmes are designed to reduce the risks associated with climate change and assist and protect our workforce, community, and business. We hope that all stakeholders will openly share information and know-how in support of a more sustainable future for the maritime sector to achieve three aspects of sustainable development across the maritime transportation system, which are economic, social, and environmental sustainability,” Stephen concluded.
