In a momentous ceremony at the Container Terminal Burchardkai in the Port of Hamburg, the “Hamburg Express,” the flagship of Hapag-Lloyd’s “Hamburg Express” class, was officially christened. The honour of naming the vessel fell to Eva Maria Tschentscher, Hamburg’s First Lady and wife of First Mayor Dr Peter Tschentscher.
As the seventh of twelve new vessels being built at Hanwha Ocean shipyard in South Korea, the Hamburg Express boasts an impressive capacity of 23,660 TEU and incorporates advanced dual-fuel technology. Currently operating on the FE3 Far East service, this state-of-the-art container ship is poised to enhance Hapag-Lloyd’s efficiency and sustainability standards in shipping.
“This ship sets new benchmarks in both technology and sustainability,” stated Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “It will reinforce our reputation for quality and efficiency, particularly on important Far East-Europe routes.”
Dr. Peter Tschentscher highlighted the significance of the Hamburg Express for both Hapag-Lloyd and the city of Hamburg itself. “The Hamburg Express symbolizes the robust partnership between Hamburg and Hapag-Lloyd, which has flourished over the past 175 years. This ship class not only exemplifies sustainability and economic efficiency but also aligns with Hamburg’s port strategy and climate protection policies,” he expressed. He wished the crew safe travels and smooth sailing ahead.
Measuring 399 meters in length, the Hamburg Express is the largest container ship to operate under the German flag. With its innovative design and LNG dual-fuel engines, the vessel is expected to improve efficiency in container transport while reducing emissions by 20 to 25 per cent in the near future, paving the way for greener shipping practices.
