DACHSER, a global logistics provider, has entered into a cooperation agreement with Tafel Deutschland, the umbrella organization of food banks in Germany. This partnership, extending until the end of 2027, will leverage DACHSER’s logistics expertise to improve the collection and delivery of food donations to Tafel’s regional distribution centers.

DACHSER will contribute its experience from its Food Logistics business line to facilitate the efficient transportation of donated food from manufacturers to Tafel’s regional units. The collaboration also includes assisting food banks in establishing effective logistics structures and expanding their networks to increase food donations from manufacturers. The initiative began on March 1st with Tafel’s organization in the German state of Hesse.

“Logistics helps food banks generate more food donations and get them to where they are needed more efficiently,” stated Alexander Tonn, COO of Road Logistics at DACHSER.

Addressing Food Waste and Supporting Those in Need

Tafel Deutschland’s network of over 970 food banks in Germany rescues approximately 265,000 metric tons of food annually, distributing it to around 1.6 million people experiencing poverty. This effort relies heavily on the work of 75,000 volunteers who collect surplus food from retailers.

The partnership with DACHSER aims to address the issue of food waste, aligning with the UN Sustainable Development Goals to halve food waste in Germany by 2030.

“In keeping with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we want to cut food waste in half here in Germany by 2030, but there are still massive surpluses along the entire value chain,” explained Andreas Steppuhn, Chairman of Tafel Deutschland e.V. “In contrast to retailers, the food banks do not yet work with food manufacturers across the board, as we need other logistics structures for this. We have been building these up for years. With DACHSER at our side, we can further optimize our infrastructure, especially in terms of IT systems and transport capacities.”

Leveraging Logistics Expertise for Social Good

DACHSER Food Logistics, a market leader in temperature-controlled food transportation in Germany, will utilize its established contacts and processes with food manufacturers to benefit Tafel. DACHSER’s sales teams will connect manufacturers with Tafel’s regional units, and DACHSER Food Logistics will handle the collection and distribution of donations to Tafel’s central depots.

This logistics partnership, initiated by former DACHSER Food Logistics Managing Director Alfred Miller, who now volunteers his logistics expertise to Tafel Deutschland, will receive both logistical and financial support from DACHSER until the end of 2027.

“Logistics helps food banks generate more food donations and get them to where they are needed more efficiently,” said Mr. Tonn. “This is our entrepreneurial core competence, which we can put to ideal use in supporting this important social task. We look forward to partnering with Tafel Deutschland.”
