PIL has recently embarked on a new milestone by commencing the construction of their first 8,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container vessel, Kota Ocean, in collaboration with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Holdings. A steel-cutting ceremony was held at Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipyard to mark this occasion, where Kota Ocean will be constructed. Kota Ocean is the first of the four 8,000 TEU LNG dual-fuel container ships that PIL ordered from Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in July last year.

The ceremony began with representatives from PIL, Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, and Lloyd’s Register signing an agreement to commence the construction work officially. PIL Executive Chairman Mr S.S. Teo and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group Executive Chairman and CEO Mr Ren Letian initiated the steel-cutting ceremony. PIL China Managing Director Anderson Luo and PIL Fleet General Manager Goh Chung Hun were also at the event.

Mr Teo said in his speech, “Our partnership with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding first began in 2015 when we ordered from them a total of 12 11,800-TEU vessels. Today, I’m honoured and excited to be at the steel-cutting ceremony for Kota Ocean, our first LNG dual-fuel container vessel with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding! This ceremony marks a new starting point to deepen our close partnership with Yangzijiang Shipbuilding further and is also a major milestone in PIL’s decarbonisation journey. Kota Ocean demonstrates our commitment towards sustainable development and represents our vision for a greener and cleaner future. Together with her three sister vessels, Kota Ocean will empower PIL to achieve our net zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2050.”

These vessels are expected to be delivered progressively from 2025. With an ammonia intermediate-ready fuel tank, all vessels can run on cleaner ammonia fuel when the technology becomes commercially available. With efficient and sustainable solutions, PIL is “Future-Focused” in their fleet renewal and expansion programme, “Driving Connectivity”.
