CMA CGM IRON, the first of CMA CGM Group’s new generation of dual-fuel methanol vessels, made its maiden call at the Port of Singapore today.
This vessel, built in Korea by Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, is the first in a series of 12 dual-fuel methanol vessels, each with a capacity of 13,000 TEUs. The sister ships, named CMA CGM COBALT, ARGON, PLATINUM, MERCURY, HELIUM, KRYPTON, THORIUM, OSMIUM, SILVER, COPPER, and GOLD, will be progressively deployed in 2025 and 2026.
This series represents a significant step towards CMA CGM Group’s goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and highlights the Group’s strategic and technological partnership with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and Korea in decarbonizing the shipping industry.
CMA CGM IRON will be deployed on the CIMEX1 service, connecting Asia to the Middle East Gulf region.
Xavier Leclercq, Vice-President in charge of Newbuilding at CMA CGM, emphasized the importance of this development, stating, “Thanks to our long-standing collaboration with the South Korean shipyard Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries, we have met the challenge of this new propulsion system. This feat of engineering brings us closer to the Net Zero Carbon goal, complementing our dual-fuel gas-powered vessels.”
