APM Terminals MedPort Tangier has successfully completed its 2 million TEU expansion, increasing the terminal’s total annual capacity to 5.2 million TEUs. This final phase, which went live this month, marks the culmination of a three-year project delivered on schedule. The expansion also extends the berth length to two kilometres, further enhancing the terminal’s capabilities.
“Almost exactly a year ago, the second phase of our expansion went live,” said Keld Pedersen, Managing Director at APM Terminals West Med. “This month, we added an additional 1 million TEU to our capacity here in Tangier. This means we are fully prepared to deliver for Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd when their new network is phased in from February 2025.”
The two terminals APM Terminals operate in Morocco and serve as hub ports, forming the backbone of the Gemini Cooperation – Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s operational collaboration covering East-West trade routes.
This expansion has also generated significant employment opportunities, with 500 new colleagues joining the MedPort Tangier team in 2023 and 2024. “Our main asset is our diverse, engaged, and dedicated workforce,” added Pedersen. “They are some of the best problem-solvers in the industry, constantly working to deliver the best possible product to our customers.”
Advanced Technology for Enhanced Efficiency
This final expansion phase reinforces MedPort Tangier’s position as one of the most technologically advanced, efficient, and safest container terminals globally. The terminal utilizes an auto-mooring system for vessel berthing, digital berth planning, and the specially developed Gemini simulation tool. These advancements contributed to the port of Tangier being ranked 4th most efficient container terminal in the world, according to a recent analysis by the World Bank and S&P Global.
“The expansion not only increases our capacity but also brings advanced technology that helps us reduce port hours, improve crane productivity, and reduce direct emissions from vessels by using shore power,” stated Pedersen. “This is not only important for our global strategy but also for the positive impact we can create for customers, communities, and employees in and around the terminal.”
