The world’s largest container ship and supply vessel operator, Denmark-based, A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S simply known as Maersk, recently celebrated 100 years of operation in the United States. The first Maersk company in the United States was established on 7 July 1919 by ship-owner A.P. Møller.
As each decade past Maersk achieved significant milestones in the USA here are a few of those milestones:
The first-ever Maersk vessel to call at a port in the United States was the LAURA MÆRSK way back in 1913, when she called Galveston, Texas, on December 2nd. Just a few years later A.P. Møller went into partnership with his cousin Hans Isbrandtsen, and created the Isbrandtsen-Moller Company Inc. the company was initially focused on chartering and brokerage, however, the overall goal was to “settle down into permanent trades”.
In 1928 the first major contract with a shipper was signed, as a result of an agreement with the Ford Motor Company for the movement of car parts to their assembly factory in Yokohama, the Maersk Line was established. The Maersk line commenced their first voyage on July 12th 1934 and would carry on with fortnightly sailings. But was yet to expand into new trade markets.
To complement their New York office and increase their presence, a new Los Angeles office was opened in 1955. Also, new agencies continued to be opened to help win more market share. In 1958 the first proprietary Maersk Line terminal facility was inaugurated at Pier 11 in Brooklyn, New York
Pier 11 was modernized for the time and enabled Maersk Line to focus on efficient cargo handling and service to the greater New York area in the 1960s, however, it had to be abandoned when Maersk Line’s USA-Asia service was containerized in 1975.
Moving forward to the 21st century the decision was made to establish APM Terminals in 2001, with the launch of Pier 400 in Los Angeles, just one year later Pier 400 became the world’s largest proprietary terminal. In 2015 the company revitalized the Sealand brand to strengthen its market position in the North, Latin and South American markets.
