Wan Hai Lines has held a naming ceremony for the WAN HAI A20, the final vessel in its series of 13,100 TEU containerships, at the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Geoje, South Korea. The event took place on 14 August 2025 and was accompanied by a corporate social responsibility donation to Sungro Orphanage.

The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Charles Chen, President of Wan Hai Lines Japan Ltd. and Director of Wan Hai Lines Singapore PTE Ltd., alongside Mr. S.A. Choi, Vice Chairman and CEO of Samsung Heavy Industries. Mrs. Irene Tsai, the spouse of Mr. Daniel Tsai, Chairman of Fubon Group, performed the christening ritual, offering blessings for the vessel’s safe voyages.

Fleet Expansion with Green Innovations

WAN HAI A20 is the thirteenth and final vessel in the newbuilding series ordered by Wan Hai Lines in 2021 and 2022. Each ship measures 335 metres in length, 51 metres in width, and has a 16-metre draft. These vessels are equipped with modern, environmentally friendly engines designed to reduce fuel consumption and improve energy efficiency.

The last three vessels in the series, starting with WAN HAI A18, are fitted with large wind deflectors on the forecastle. This addition contributes to further fuel savings during long-haul voyages. All vessels in the series have obtained “Smart Ship Notation,” enabling real-time monitoring of ship navigation and machinery operations.

Upon delivery, WAN HAI A20 will join the company’s Asia to South America West Coast service (ASA), further strengthening its operational capacity and competitive edge in long-haul trades.

Looking Ahead

With the successful completion of this 13,100 TEU series, Wan Hai Lines is positioned for continued fleet growth. Between 2026 and 2030, the company plans to take delivery of 30 additional newbuilds, enhancing both tonnage and service reliability.

In keeping with its corporate motto, We carry, we care, Wan Hai Lines also made a charitable contribution to Sungro Orphanage during the ceremony. This gesture reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to giving back to the local communities it engages with globally.
