Hutchison Ports Thailand Welcomes Deputy Minister of Transport

Hutchison Ports Thailand (HPT), the leading port operator in Thailand, led by Managing Director – Mr. Stephen Ashworth together with his management team, recently welcomed Mr. Atirat Rattanaset, Deputy Minister of Transport and officers from the Ministry of Transport. The group observed the operation of Terminal D’s cranes which are equipped with remote control technology; a first for Thailand. During the visit, the group also toured HPT’s new high-tech visitors center.

In fact, Terminal D is one of the world’s first container terminals to be fully equipped with remote control technology for all of its ship-to-shore cranes and rubber tyred yard cranes. Terminal D will be the largest and most advanced deep-sea container terminal in Thailand, with the ability to handle some of the world’s largest ocean-going container vessels currently in operation. This infrastructure development project is also in line with the Deputy Minister of Transport’s long-term plan to develop infrastructure for logistics and transportation, with the focus on the deep sea port development within Laem Chabang Port as one of the most crucial aspects of the overall development of the Eastern Economic Corridor.

The first phase of Terminal D is now fully operational, offering a combined total of 1,000 meters of deep-water berth, 6 of the world’s largest ship-to-shore cranes, and 20 supporting rubber tyred yard cranes. On full completion, Terminal D will operate a total of 1,700 meters of berth, with 17 ship-to-shore cranes and 43 rubber tyred yard cranes all using remote control technology, and adding an additional 3.5 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit of container) of capacity to HPT’s overall operations. This will increase the container handling capacity at Laem Chabang Port to approximately 13 million TEU.
