Pride of the Swiss-based shipping line, the Mediterranean Shipping Company vessel, MSC Jewel has been declared as the leanest container ship to visit the United States. Built-in 2019, the MSC Jewel is 1,200 feet long with a capacity of 14,436 twenty-foot equivalent units and powered by Tier III diesel engines (main propulsion and auxiliary power), which are 75% cleaner than the Tier II standard set by the International Maritime Organization.

The vessel arrived at Total Terminals International’s Pier T facility at the Port of Long Beach on July 12th

The shipping line is continuing to invest heavily in advancements in technology to meet or exceed the new regulations, finding innovative solutions and maximizing its environmental performance. Environment and efficiency are paramount when designing such vessels resulting in many benefits for both business customers and partners alike.

The Port of Long Beach has long been considered as a pioneer in innovative environmental stewardship and sustainability along with being the premier gateway for trans-Pacific trade into U.S. MSC operates one of the most productive and largest terminals North America at the Port.

To minimize emissions when berthed, all MSC vessels that visit California ports are shore-power equipped, allowing for them to connect directly to the onshore electrical grid.
