The world’s 14th largest container line in terms of vessel capacity, South Korean-based Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) recently held a prestigious naming ceremony at the Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME)’s Okpo shipyard in Geoje, Korea. The new 300,000 dwt Very Large Crude Oil Carrier (VLCC), was named ‘Universal Leader’.
The ceremony was attended by over 100 distinguished guests from the shipping industry, including President & CEO of HMM, C.K. Yoo, President & CEO of DSME, Sung Leep Jung and President of Korea Ocean Business Corporation, Ho Seon Hwang.
Mr. Hwang’s wife, Mrs. Jang Mi No who was also In attendance was given the honor of godmother and cut the ropes to officially name the ship during the ceremony.
HMM signed a contract with DSME for construction of five VLCCs and ‘Universal Leader’ in September 2017 and the vessel is the first of five VLCCs scheduled to be delivered every two months until September 2019.
Each of the five vessels is replete with a scrubber system in preparation for IMO environmental regulations and fuel consumption is significantly reduced optimal economic speed feature of the engines.
CEO of Hyundai Merchant Marine, C.K. Yoo said, “The launch of Universal Leader is a springboard for HMM’s Quantum Leap, HMM will move forward through securing five VLCCs in addition to the delivery of twelve 23,000 TEU and eight 15,000 TEU eco-friendly mega containerships from 2020 and 2021 respectively.”
