An innovative flow battery designed by US-based Jolt Energy Storage Technologies (Jolt) recently won the prestigious $100,000 Wallenius Wilhelmsen Orcelle Award. The new technology could offer an alternative to shore power for the shipping industry.

The company is developing a completely organic flow battery solution that requires no expensive membrane or catalyst to generate energy and which is durable and scalable. The proposed solution aims to store energy in the mWh to gWh range, which is enough to supply a vessel while alongside.  Jolt is also devising further solutions in renewable energy in which each battery can be used to store energy from wind and solar along with other intermittent renewable energy sources.

Chief Scientist at Jolt Energy Storage Technologies, Tom Guarr said, “Winning the award is a tremendous boom for us, it will allow us to really accelerate our efforts towards making renewable and environmentally responsible energy a reality for the shipping industry.”

COO for Wallenius Wilhelmsen Solutions, Raymond Fitzgerald on presenting the award said, “Sustainability used to be a choice that companies made. Today, it’s no longer a choice, it’s a requirement and a core element of strategy, one that with the power of social media has a direct impact on a brand and its ultimate success.”

Mr. Fitzgerald further added, “With its focus on innovation and environmental sustainability, the Ocean Exchange is a fantastic model for collaboration and for translating ideas into action.”

Established by Wallenius Wilhelmsen in 2007, the Orcelle Award is one of two $100,000 prizes awarded at the Ocean Exchange each year.
