One of the world’s leading Heavy Lift specialists, German-based Hansa Heavy Lift recently transported two fully-assembled ship-to-shore (STS) container gantry cranes for Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd. The cranes were collected at DSG Terminal, Port of Cork, Ireland, before sailing on and discharging them at the Port of Hull, United Kingdom.

This was the first time a Liebherr Gantry Crane had been shipped fully assembled via a lift-on and lift-off method on a heavy lift vessel. The vessel in question was the HHL Lagos.

Each of the cranes measured 81.4 meters by 30.3 meters by 57.3 meters.

Hansa Heavy Lift Head of Projects, Engineering Department, Emek Ersin Takmaz said, “This was a complex project where in-depth engineering knowledge and operational expertise was an absolute requirement throughout all stages, paying close attention to every detail, whilst working hand-in-hand with our customer from the beginning, as well as successful cooperation on site, helped us to eliminate any possible risks and allowed us to execute the project seamlessly as planned.”

Tailor-made sea fastening and load spreading structures, as well as special rigging arrangements for loading and discharge operations were devised and designed by engineering teams from both Hansa Heavy Lift and Liebherr.

Upon arrival at the DSG Terminal, Port of Cork, self-propelled modular transporters were used to move the STS cranes alongside. Once on-board the first of two cranes were moved to the forward end of the vessel hatch covers, followed by the second crane being lifted directly into its stowage position in the vessel’s cargo hold. At the Port of Hull, both cranes were discharged directly onto the rails.

Liebherr Container Cranes Transport and Shipping Manager, Denis Doolan said, “This project was quite a challenging one from a logistics point of view and one which took months in the planning.

“The success of this shipment was mainly attributed to the professionalism, teamwork and planning of the engineers of both Liebherr container cranes and Hansa Heavy Lift.

“Liebherr strives to develop different options of delivery to our clients worldwide and this shipment was another example of our drive to deliver top quality product by various different methods.”
