The multinational German-based transportation company, Hapag-Lloyd recently announced a major new investment of 11,100 state-of-the-art reefer containers to strengthen their container fleet.

The new order will be added to their existing fleet of 91,000 reefer containers, delivery will begin in August 2018 and is expected to be complete by December 2018.

Currently, Hapag-Lloyd has a very firm foothold in the refrigerated container market, and over the last few years, the company has continued to invest in new reefer equipment when it becomes available, enabling them to offer a modern fleet to the customers.

Hapag-Lloyd Director for Reefer Products, Clemens Holz said, “We experience very positive feedback from our clients on our ability to deliver consistent quality services in the reefer business. Furthermore, we see an increasing demand from clients to transport temperature-sensitive goods. To benefit from additional opportunities in this attractive market segment, we have decided to increase our reefer fleet.”

A new technology called ‘Controlled Atmosphere’ will feature in the new 40’ containers. Controlled Atmosphere slows down the ripening process, extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables. The new order of state-of-the-art containers are replete with high-efficiency cooling units, due to an optimised power control, the containers will consume significantly less energy, without any effect in performance and temperature precision.

Hapag-Lloyd Director for Container Engineering and Maintenance, Frank Nachbar commented, “The new reefer containers undergo intensive tests before they are made available for our customers to transport their valuable freight.”

This new order will bolster the company’s footprint in both the transport of fresh produce and other sensitive products in reefer containers, such as high-value pharmaceuticals.
