The CMA CGM Group have recently announced the very sad news of the passing of their Founding President Mr. Jacques R. Saade. His death was announced on 24th of June 2018, he was 81 years old.
Mr. Saade was an extraordinary visionary and entrepreneur who dedicated his life to CMA CGM. He made the group a global leader in maritime industry for the transportation of containers and introduced the company to over 160 countries, while always keeping a focus on a family environment with their values.
Due to the civil war in Lebanon Mr. Saade took his family to France and on 13th September 1978 founded Compagnie Maritime d’Affretement (CMA). The CMA Company with just four employees, one vessel and only one service of operation between Marseilles and Beirut, soon after the company soon blossomed. He sent his first ships to beyond the Mediterranean in 1983 with them crossing the Suez Canal. Three years later he launched North Europe to Asia service and in 1992 opened CMA’s first office in Shanghai.
Several strategic acquisitions were made in the following years helping the company to strengthen their presence in the key global markets. By the year 2006 CMA CGM became the third largest container shipping company in the world.
Due to his very strong ties with the city of Marseilles, Mr. Saade constructed the CMA CGM Tower which would serve as the new headquarters of the Group and has since become a a symbol of the city.
