Panalpina Rolls Out New IT Platform in Germany

Panalpina Rolls Out New IT Platform in Germany

Panalpina continues to upgrade its new operational IT platform and is in the middle of its roll-out in Germany. The company says that during the ramp-up, Germany will focus on having all Ocean Freight transactions handled on the new system by July and all Air Freight transactions by October at the latest.

Panalpina originally went live with its new transportation management system at the end of May, in different business units throughout Germany. Before the actual go-live took place in Germany, a major release upgrade was installed, that brought significant improvements and new functionalities to the system.

“With the go-live and phased deployment of our new transportation management system in Germany, we have successfully demonstrated the system’s ability to scale-up to higher volumes and are now tackling larger countries with more confidence,” says Alain Dejalle, chief transformation officer at Panalpina. “To put things into perspective: Panalpina Germany is our third biggest organization in terms of shipment transactions globally. The successful roll-out in Germany will further confirm the system’s capabilities. Germany is now the fifth country using our new operating platform, after Switzerland, Singapore, Italy and Canada, where the system has already been fully implemented.”

Once the roll-out in Germany is completed, about 30% of all transactions will be handled on the new platform. The preparations for deployment in the next big country, the U.S., are well advanced and its roll-out will be another important milestone in this project.

“Ensuring business continuity for our customers is always the top priority when we roll out the new system in a country,” explains Dominik Wiesler, Panalpina’s country manager for Germany. “I am happy to report there have been no disruptions or negative impacts on our customers. We’ve made great progress and our teams have done a tremendous job.”

Panalpina’s CEO Stefan Karlen says: “I am very pleased with the successful roll-out in Germany. This is an important milestone in our operations transformation program, and validates both the scalability and robustness of our approach. While we see continuous strong volumes, we are still facing margin erosion, as previously communicated. As a result, we expect these market challenges to adversely impact our profitability levels and we anticipate lower results for the first half of the year, compared to the same period last year.”

One of the world’s biggest logistics companies, Kuwait headquartered Agility, recently announced a major new investment of $100 million over three years to develop and launch Shipa.com. The new digital platform will allow businesses, entrepreneurs and consumers to manage their freight, e-commerce, and urban deliveries online. Chairwoman for Agility, Henadi Al-Saleh said, “Shipa.com makes life easier through technology, whether you are a small business running your supply chain with a few clicks, or a consumer getting your shopping delivered with a few taps on your phone, Shipa.com makes logistics convenient, jargon-free, trackable, accountable and accessible.” Shipa.com will provide the following services: Shipa Freight that will allow small businesses to get instant and transparent freight quotes along with the ability to book, pay and track ocean and air shipments around the world on any mobile or another digital device. Shipa E-commerce enables online merchant’s access to the world’s most complex and fastest growing e-commerce networks. The service will integrate freight, fulfilment, delivery and returns solutions throughout the Arabian Gulf, along with additional reach in Africa and Europe planned for the future. Shipa Delivery will provide businesses and consumers with on-demand same-day, next-day or cross-border delivery across the whole region of Arabian Gulf. Al-Saleh added, “Logistics is the backbone of commerce. But it’s complex, and that complexity is disproportionately difficult for small businesses to navigate. Small businesses often lack access to the logistics resources, tools and solutions that larger businesses have,” “No wonder then, that we interviewed 800 small and medium-sized businesses around the world, we found that 78% wanted to see their logistics move online. Shipa helps close that gap, empowering small businesses to take advantage of the opportunities being created by the global digital economy.” Considered by Al-Saleh as the innovation arm of Agility, Shipa.com will hasten the introduction of technology, development of new digital products. Al-Saleh concluded, “Shipa.com is the marriage of Agility’s logistics expertise and resources and the digital-first capabilities of the Shipa platform. It offers enormous value for our customers and brings new value to our company.”
